Getting Started with Proxmox

A beginners guide to getting started with Proxmox:

Virtualization technology has revolutionized the way we use computers, allowing us to run multiple operating systems on a single hardware platform. Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment) is a powerful and free open-source server virtualization platform that combines two virtualization technologies: KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) for virtual machines and LXC (Linux Containers) for container-based virtualization.

For beginners looking to set up a Proxmox server, see our guide below:

Step 1: Prepare Your Hardware
Before installing Proxmox, ensure your hardware meets the minimum requirements. Make sure you have at least one 64-bit processor with virtualization support, a minimum of 2 GB RAM (more is recommended for running multiple VMs), and a hard drive with at least 16 GB of space.

Step 2: Download Proxmox VE
Visit the Proxmox website and download the latest ISO image of Proxmox VE. Burn the image to a CD/DVD or create a bootable USB drive.

Step 3: Install Proxmox VE
Boot your server from the installation media. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Proxmox. You’ll need to select your country, time zone, and keyboard layout, as well as to enter a password for the “root” user and your network configuration.

Step 4: Access Proxmox’s Web Interface
After installation, you can access the Proxmox web interface by entering https://your-server's-IP-address:8006 in your web browser. Log in with the username “root” and the password you set during installation.

Step 5: Configure Your Proxmox Server
Once logged in, you can start configuring your Proxmox server. Create a new VM by clicking on “Create VM” in the right-hand corner. Fill in the necessary details such as the VM’s name, OS type, and installation media.

Step 6: Start Your Virtual Machines
After configuring your VMs, you can start them by selecting the VM and clicking “Start.” You can then access the VM’s console through the web interface to install the operating system.

Step 7: Explore Proxmox’s Features
Proxmox offers many features, such as snapshots, backups, and clustering. Take the time to explore these features to fully utilize the capabilities of your Proxmox server.

Remember, this is just a basic guide to get you started. Proxmox VE is a robust platform with many advanced features worth exploring as you become more comfortable with virtualization technology. Happy virtualizing!
